July 25: Return of the Salads

Hello and Happy Friday to you all! How the heck is it the end of July. This month whizzes by every year. Summer days are long but we always seem to stuff them full and squeeze every last drop. We have had a couple of great weeks at the market, hopefully you have stopped by and noticed our new set-up and some new offerings such as our herb bouquets!

This week, our featured herb in the bouquet is dill! Complemented by some dill seed, fennel and bee balm/ dahlias for a nice pop of colour.

We have had a good week of some cooler temps and some ups and downs of more staffing changes. Thanks to all who have reached out about part-time work and energy exchange opportunities; we are settled (for now) but we have moved our garlic pull date to this THURSDAY, JULY 31st from 6-8pm! We will have some iced herby tea, snacks and everyone will leave with a garlic head (at LEAST). Let us know by email or DM if you plan to attend :)

Salads are back!

We were lucky to have an old friend of Carlos in town this week and the two of them got to cheffing up a new ready-made salad for the market:

Marinated cucumber with radishes, beets and chilli herb crunch!

“Coming up with this salad with Erin felt great! There’s something special about the back and forth in creating a dish, even a dish as simple as a salad.  That collaboration tends to take you on winding roads that eventually land you at a great combination of flavours and textures.  All the while, we spent the time catching up without skipping a beat.”

-Carlos

We trialled the salads on Wednesday and are pleased to have them for tomorrow’s market as well. Get them before they go!!

a note from Carlos re: Preservation Workshop

“After having many ideas and thoughts of doing workshops and events at the Central Okanagan Community Foodbank, I was finally able to pull together a food preservation workshop this past week. The workshop was quite fulfilling;  I connected with people genuinely interested in learning about pickling and canning. It was the first time I ever did any teaching like that, and it was fun!

Since I started farming, I’ve wanted to incorporate a socially beneficial branch to the business; this workshop was a great opportunity to take steps in that direction.

Some rapid fire tips to store away for next time you wand to pickle or can something:

  • Top tips for a quick pickle? Use small jars (500ml or less), warm the jars, and use lots of fresh herbs!

  • Top tips/things to remember for jam? Always test the set point of the jam before putting it in the jars!

  • What’s your favourite type of jam? I like low-sugar jams with fun and funky flavour combinations.  A few years back, Rad Jamz made a Blueberry and Scotch jam that was a killer combo.”

That’s what we’ve got for you this week! Once again, let us know if you can come help us pull garlic next THURSDAY, JULY 31st between 6PM-8PM. We need all the hands we can get!

See you at the farm (like, maybe helping us pull garlic ;) or the market or somewhere in between real soon .
