April 18: Slashing Priorities

…in other words: practicing triage on the farm from one minor emergency to the next. What is happening, you may ask? Picture this: It's spring, and as we humans search through the stalls of the market and grocery store for what is fresh, green, local and available, so do others…namely the quail that Carlos is battling in the fields! As quickly as we can seed and transplant, so do the quail pitter patter over and take their pick, either devouring or mussing up what they can. Right now, they’re after our brassicas! Who knows what it will be next but even as the days get longer, there isn’t enough time for the ever-growing to-do list of a small farm business in April.

The troublesome neighbours!

Easter Long Weekend @ Kelowna Farmer’s and Crafter’s Market

But it’s not all bad! It’s Easter weekend and we are stoked to be back at the market this week…it’s really time! We are returning with some of our favourites early crops: spinach, radishes, the famous herb salad mix (spring version), green onions and all our classic Table Goods, including Rhubarb & Thyme Jam, Pickle Relish, and our classic Chimichurri! We are trying a new spin on the “chef-turned-farmer” offering as Carlos is preparing some ready-to-eat root veg (carrot, potato and sunchoke) in a garlic and chimichurri marinade, ready for you to throw in your oven and enjoy.

Spinach spinach spinach!

We will have small bags and big bags of fresh spinach at the market tomorrow!

Anyone interested in work/produce exchange?

We have grown and adjusted the staff this year but have been considering opening up the farm to our community. We’d love to start some energy exchange with volunteers dropping in some mornings/evenings throughout the summer in exchange for produce. If you are interested in this type of arrangement and want to discuss it further, send us an email or a DM on Instagram to chat more!

Otherwise, we will see you bright and early at the Landmark for what should be an incredible long weekend market.

Talk soon!
