Aug 29: Weed party

End of August, holy moly. Where has the summer gone?

The crazy thing is that we are only JUST beginning the harvest season. You feel things winding down in the month of August in some aspects, but the weather and the plants are like, “LET’S GO”.

Volunteer thank you!

Speaking of “LET’S GO”, we are so thankful for the awesome turnout of volunteers who came out on Wednesday and Thursday. We dug in deep, had ourselves a weed party (not that kind), and then snacked on some delicious salad provided by Carlos, followed by fresh plums. Carlos has some newly planted artichokes, table grapes and dahlias in a bed with a vision (ie. not producing much…yet), hence, it had been overtaken with mallow (one of the usual suspects of field weeds) and got shifted down the priority list. Having the 5 volunteers show up this week really made an impossible-feeling task fly by, reinvigorating us and filling our cup. Thank you once more to all who showed up.

Check the before (L) and after (Middle) of the mallow clear out! Mallow is a hearty weed that can take over but it is entirely edible and has high nutritional content and plenty of culinary applications. Check out this blog for more details…if you were curious!

Announcement:

We are not doing regular Wednesday markets anymore, so Saturdays or order ahead/farm pick-up are your best bet. And speaking of ordering, just a reminder to our Seasonal Shareholders (those who invested in the farm credit system at the beginning of the season), make sure to make some orders! We have a ton of amazing produce ripening every week and we don’t want it (or your funds) to expire!

It’s the long weekend, so we hope for a busy, bangin’ market. We’re bringing the usual fair, all the herbs except our dill and cilantro are in short supply so they are only available in our limited herb bouquets. Tons of herb salad but it always sells out so make sure you get out early if you had your heart set on it!

Hope your long weekend is restful, exciting, productive or whatever you need it to be!

Cheers,

-OKHP Crew
