Sept 5: One thing after another

This week has been marked with faded, sepia-toned sky from the Coquihalla wildfire that has taken the edge off the final big push of summer temperatures and turned them mild and unsettling. The chilly, faded mornings greet us with each rise of the piercing red sun.

This week what we thought would be a quick repair on the trusty ol market van, turned out to be a bit more catastrophic. A meeting with the mechanic then led to some messages and phone calls made, and boom: we got a new van. I saw a post recently where someone was commenting that when they were a kid they were told that life is just one thing after another and now, as an adult, you truly see that life is, indeed, just one thing…after another…on repeat.

Now for some fun news.

We want to bring your attention to one of our neat crops this year: the habanada pepper! No, not a typo, this is a pepper different from the habanero because it was bred to have the flavour of a habanero without the heat (hence, ‘nada‘).

When you chomp one, your brain is primed for spice, but all it gets is a complex, almost peachy flavour. Definitely worth the try next time you want to bring the pepper flavour to a dish without melting your face!

Market this weekend will look different as Carlos is taking off for some well-deserved R&R, which means Amanda will be greeting you at the stall this Saturday. Herb bouquets this week feature oregano, paired with the last of our purple anise hyssop, some sunflower buds and a dahlia for a pop. New on the market list, we have some lemongrass and ginger freshly harvested and ready for your next stirfry, BBQ or sauce. As well, we are fully in tomato, zucchini, and cucumber season, so please come stock up! Time to get pickling, drying and freezing.

Hope to see you there!
